Sega’s Mega Drive was an amazing success and helped SEGA become a powerhouse in the gaming industry.
Sega Mega Drive / Genesis
The Mega Drive & Genesis was Sega's third console and the successor to the Master System. Sega released it as the Mega Drive in Japan in 1988, and later as the Genesis in North America in 1989. Whilst the console still lagged behind Nintendo’s SNES, it did manage to carve out a decent amount of sales.
The Megadrive & Genesis is home to a library of over 900 games created by Sega and a wide array of third-party publishers including EA. Several add-ons were released, including a Power Base Converter to play Master System games, the 32X and the Sega CD.
Mega Drive & Genesis Success
However the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis was very almost a failure before it even really got started. Several things contributed to Sega’s success, including and business deal around a very particular cartridge.
